The Best Beaches in Western Australia You Haven’t Visited

Ah, Western Australia. If there’s one thing we do exceptionally well, it’s beaches. We’re talking miles and miles of pristine coastline, from the rugged beauty of the Kimberley to the turquoise waters of the southwest. While everyone flocks to the usual suspects, I’m here to let you in on a few secrets.

As a resident who’s spent countless weekends exploring every nook and cranny, particularly around my home turf in the Great Southern and Albany, I’ve discovered some absolute gems. These are the places where you can escape the crowds, feel the soft sand between your toes, and truly connect with the ocean. These aren’t just beaches; they’re experiences.

Why Seek Out the Lesser-Known?

Sure, Cottesloe is iconic, and Cable Beach is legendary. But there’s a special kind of magic in discovering a beach that feels like your own private paradise. It’s about the quiet, the untouched nature, and the feeling of genuine discovery. These are the spots where you can watch the sunset without a hundred other people vying for the perfect photo.

For us locals, finding these hidden havens is part of the WA lifestyle. It’s about exploring beyond the well-trodden path and appreciating the sheer diversity our coastline offers. From sheltered coves perfect for a calm dip to dramatic surf breaks that thrill the experienced, WA has it all.

Hidden Coastal Treasures of the Great Southern

Let’s start close to home. The Great Southern region is often overlooked by those heading further north or south, but it boasts some of the most breathtaking and uncrowded beaches I know. These are my personal favourites, places I return to time and again.

Little Beach, Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve

This is a classic for a reason, but it still flies under the radar for many tourists. Tucked away within the stunning Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, Little Beach is a crescent of pure white sand with incredibly clear, calm, and often dazzlingly turquoise water. It’s sheltered from the prevailing winds, making it perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and just lazing about.

Insider Tip: Pack a picnic! There are BBQ facilities and picnic tables, and you’ll want to spend hours here. Keep an eye out for the resident quokkas that sometimes wander nearby. The drive to the beach itself is also spectacular, winding through native bushland.

Emu Point, Albany

While many know Emu Point for its boating facilities and caravan park, the actual beach area is a fantastic, sheltered spot for families and those wanting calm waters. The shallow, clear bay is ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply letting the kids splash around safely. It offers beautiful views back towards Albany and the harbour.

Local Secret: During the warmer months, the local café at Emu Point does amazing fish and chips. Grab some and enjoy them right on the sand. It’s a quintessential Great Southern experience.

Congo Beach, near Denmark

If you’re looking for a more rugged, wilder beach experience, Congo Beach is your spot. Located east of Denmark, it’s a long stretch of golden sand backed by dramatic dunes and coastal heath. It’s a popular spot for surfers and anglers, and the powerful waves here are a sight to behold.

Local Secret: While not ideal for swimming due to the strong currents, Congo Beach is incredible for beachcombing and long walks. At low tide, you can often find fascinating shells and driftwoood. The drive through the surrounding national parks to get here is also a highlight.

Further Afield: Coastal Gems You Must Explore

Venture a bit further and you’ll uncover even more incredible beaches that deserve a spot on your WA bucket list.

Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, William Bay National Park

While these are more well-known than Little Beach, they are still often overshadowed by the more accessible beaches closer to Perth. Greens Pool is a natural swimming pool, protected by massive granite boulders, offering incredibly calm and clear water that’s perfect for all ages. Just a short walk away are Elephant Rocks, where giant smooth boulders resemble a herd of elephants bathing in the ocean. The contrast of the clear water against the granite is simply stunning.

Insider Tip: Visit during the week or early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially during school holidays. The colour of the water here is truly unforgettable, a vibrant turquoise that has to be seen to be believed.

Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park

Okay, this one is becoming more famous, but it’s still a must-mention because it genuinely lives up to the hype. Cape Le Grand National Park is home to Lucky Bay, renowned for its powdery white sand (said to be among the whitest in Australia) and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The best part? You’ll often find friendly kangaroos lounging on the sand, making for some truly unique photo opportunities.

Local Secret: While you can drive onto Lucky Bay, consider parking and walking to explore the further reaches of the beach. You’ll often find even more secluded spots and better chances of spotting wildlife away from the main access points.

Mettams Pool, Trigg (Perth Metro)

For those who don’t have the time to venture too far south, there’s a gem right in the Perth metropolitan area that many locals cherish. Mettams Pool is a sheltered cove protected by a limestone reef, making it an exceptional spot for snorkelling. The water is generally very calm, and you can see an abundance of marine life, including colourful fish and sometimes even small sharks.

Insider Tip: Go early on a weekday morning for the best experience. You’ll have the reef to yourself and can enjoy a peaceful snorkel. It’s a fantastic introduction to WA’s underwater world without the long drive.

Hamelin Bay, near Augusta

This is a special place that offers a truly unique experience. Hamelin Bay is famous for its friendly stingrays that often come right up to the shore to interact with visitors. It’s a magical encounter, seeing these graceful creatures glide through the shallow, clear waters. The beach itself is beautiful too, with soft sand and calm conditions perfect for a relaxed swim.

Local Secret: While the stingrays are the main draw, the surrounding coastline is also stunning. Take a walk along the beach and explore the rocky outcrops for incredible views and a chance to spot local birdlife. Be respectful of the marine life and avoid touching the rays.

Planning Your Coastal Adventure

When planning your trip to these incredible beaches, remember a few things:

  • Check the Weather: WA weather can be unpredictable. Always check the forecast before you go.
  • Pack Essentials: Sunscreen, hats, water, snacks, and a good book are non-negotiable.
  • Respect the Environment: Leave no trace. Take all your rubbish with you and be mindful of the delicate coastal ecosystems.
  • Be Water Safe: Always swim between the flags if available, and be aware of ocean conditions, especially on more exposed beaches.

Western Australia’s coastline is a national treasure. By venturing off the beaten track, you’ll discover beaches that offer not just beauty, but a sense of peace and a connection to nature that’s increasingly rare. These are the places that remind me why I love living here – the vastness of the ocean, the purity of the sand, and the sheer joy of finding a slice of paradise all to yourself.
